Family Services of Western Pennsylvania
Family Services of Western Pennsylvania provides a range of services including behavioral health (mental health and drug & alcohol), mental retardation, foster care, support to families with a member in a state correctional facility, employee assistance program and financial independence related services (transportation loans, financial literacy, legal consultation related to predatory lending). Behavioral health services supports recovery thorough all of our services.
Accomplishments
- Reduced use of coercive services
- Reduced times people hear others described by their diagnosis
- Trained staff and consumers on principles and practices of recovery
- Developed crisis plans for all consumers
- Initiated Psychiatric Advanced Directives
- Increased hours in Drop-In Centers
- Increased referrals from community residential rehabilitation program to supportive living
- Included a recovery survey question on satisfaction survey
- Included recovery measures in outcomes data collection
- Expanded participation of consumers in governance
Future Projects
- Train consumers and staff across programs with the use of co-led team of staff & consumers
- Expand recovery-focused Services
- Implement recovery-based perfection consumer care quality model
- Expand consumer participation in Board of Trustees and Advisory Board
- Develop crisis plans for all consumers

Challenges:
- Training 400 staff many of whom have limited training opportunities
- Different programs and divisions embracing recovery on different schedules.
- Speed of change – speed of change is making it hard for some staff to keep up with the progress and do their job at the same time
- Some staff reluctant to embrace financial incentives and regulations of the current system
- Increasing staff’s comfort level in working with consumers as full partners
